TAMPA, Fla. — A 16-year-old died Monday after a weekend crash in Tampa.
Tampa police said Carlos Medina, 16, and a passenger were behind another car on South Davis Boulevard when he tried to pass in a no-passing zone. Officers said Medina was speeding and lost control of the car.
Investigators said the car spun, hit a curb and crashed into a light pole on the driver's side. It came to rest on the passenger side.
Medina was taken to Tampa General for surgery. He died Monday.
Police said the passenger was not injured and continue to investigate the crash.
Medina was well-known in the swimming community and was a student at Plant High School. Hillsborough County Schools said there are now grief counselors at the school.
Greater Tampa Swimming announced his death Monday afternoon on Twitter.
